I had such high hopes for this book after reading the other reviews, but it turned out to be little more than a tribute to teen angst abroad. One might expect this of teenagers but not travel writers, even the second-rate variety. Rite of Passage presents a series of backpacking vignettes told by a number of different authors, in a variety of styles and settings. The problem is, with a few exceptions, the stories are all the same: a covert hookup in a hostel, consumption of an unusual animal by-product, a mugging that common sense could have avoided, or a “love” that was just never meant to be. I really hope there’s more to Europe than that! Rite of Passage made me want to cancel my trip.

I’m preparing for a trip to Europe, and reading firsthand accounts prepared me for a lot of backpacking quirks that traditional guidebooks don’t convey. Will be taking this with me on my trip!

  3. Easy read. An engrossing collection of short stories from multiple authors covering a wide series of topics from one night stands to theft of personal belongings.

I initially purchased this book hoping for a few “tips/tricks” for an upcoming trip to Europe. Though the stories are not instructional, they do provide first hand experiences. Many of which are very entertaining. I am sure you could find some tips in there if you look close enough.

If you are just looking for a fun book to read – this is the one.
